Compared to standard 40wt and 50wt sewing threads, 12wt thread has a much heavier profile, making it perfect for bold decorative stitching, quilting, appliqué, topstitching, and embellishment.
Because of its thicker weight, sewing with 12wt thread requires a few adjustments to your usual machine setup. The right needle, bobbin thread, tension, stitch length, and sewing speed can make a big difference in how smoothly your thread runs and how your finished stitches look.
If you’re wondering how to sew with 12wt thread, here are five simple adjustments to help you get started.
How to Sew With 12wt Thread on a Sewing Machine
1. Start With the Right Needle
For most 12wt threads, start with a 90/14 or 100/16 topstitch needle.
Topstitch needles have a larger eye and a deeper groove along the shaft which gives enough room for the thread to move through the needle while stitching.
If you’re sewing through fusible materials, a super non-stick needle greatly reduces friction and helps the thread glide through the material to prevent shredding and thread breakage.
2. Use a Fine Bobbin Thread
To get flat, clean stitches that don’t look bulky, avoid pairing your 12wt thread with another heavy thread in the bobbin. For most applications, use a fine bobbin thread such as DecoBob™ 80wt to keep the seams flatter and reduce any tension issues.
3. Adjust Your Thread Tension
Depending on your sewing machine, you may need to lower or increase the top tension slightly.
Lowering the tension means to loosen it, and increasing the tension means to tighten it.
If the bobbin thread is being pulled noticeably to the top, the top tension may be too tight. If the top thread is being pulled underneath the fabric, your tension may be too loose.
Aim for getting the perfect stitch by having the top and bobbin thread nested in the center, between the fabric layers.
4. Slow Down Your Sewing Speed
Slowing your stitching speed can help when working with heavier thread, especially when sewing dense decorative designs.
Sewing at a slower speed gives the thread more time to pass smoothly through the needle and form each stitch, which prevents issues like thread breakage and uneven stitching.
5. Lengthen Your Stitch Length
Because 12wt thread takes up more space than finer threads, shorter stitch length can make your stitching look crowded. Increasing the stitch length gives the heavier thread more room, for a cleaner, more defined finish.
Choosing the best 12wt Thread?

A Quick 12wt Setup Checklist
Before you start sewing, check:
- Needle: 90/14 or 100/16 topstitch
- Bobbin: Fine thread such as DecoBob™ 80wt
- Tension: Test and adjust on scrap fabric
- Stitch length: Start around 2.5–3.0 mm for straight stitching
- Speed: Slow down if you experience shredding or breaks
