Welcome to the 2026 Block of the Month, Butterfly Sanctuary. This year-long project brings together vibrant threadwork and mindful stitching in one stunning quilt. You can stitch it in Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), Hand Embroidery Wool Appliqué, or both. Choose the technique that fits your style, or try them together.

At its heart, Butterfly Sanctuary celebrates growth and transformation, with each block introducing new stitching skills that build upon one another, unfolding into a larger story as your quilt comes to life.

Wool Appliqué Quilt 

The Butterfly Sanctuary wool appliqué version is a wonderful way to explore our Merino Wool fabric while building your skills in appliqué and hand embroidery. To get you started, we put together thoughtfully curated thread packs that include everything you need to create rich textures and beautifully embellished details.

First, the wool appliqué thread kit includes Ellana™, our 12wt wool thread designed for stitching and embellishing appliqué edges. It pairs beautifully with the WonderFil Merino Wool, blending into each piece for a clean, professional finish.

Also included are two packs of Eleganza™, our 8wt Egyptian cotton thread in a limited-edition Butterfly Sanctuary tin. Because it comes in both solid and variegated colors, this hand embroidery thread works beautifully for all decorative stitches and embellishing details.

The FPP version of the Butterfly Sanctuary quilt features the same 12 butterflies, each beautifully spread across the individual blocks.

This set includes three colors of DecoBob™, our 80wt lightweight, cottonized polyester thread. Designed for strength without adding bulk, DecoBob™ is your go-to thread for achieving flatter seams and crisp edges.

BOM piecing pack:

This incredible 80wt 2-ply cottonized polyester thread carries a textured matte finish and has been specially treated to behave like cotton while eliminating stretch. Fine yet durable, this lightweight thread reduces bulk in stitching, resulting in smoother, rounder curves, and is ideal for achieving acute miters for a clean, professional finish.
